Homecoming
Half a world away, I lie here
unable to escape restlessness
Vivid images play on repeat,
and even with shut eyes
I cannot look away
My slumber has been compromised
by the echoing thunder of war
Although here,
There will be no cries from sirens or loudspeakers

You could write a book
on how ‘mean’ I am
and only use
a few short sentences
to describe my better qualities
I’m sure you think
that I’ve changed
over the years
but, are you also willing
to take into consideration
what has changed me

Two restless vessels
Drifting on separate courses
through this desolate mess
Yet, even blinded by the sands,
and the dust in these storms
I close my eyes, and there…
visions of your lips begin to form
as if on a painter’s canvass
I manage to assemble the details
that comprise each of your features
Moving my hands through the air,
as if you were there
My queen, my friend, my lover, my teacher
